St. Louis Cardinals Make Big Move With Willson Contreras
President of baseball operations John Mozeliak confirmed the shift, stating it was a joint decision aimed at preserving Contreras’ health and prolonging his career.
“It’s unlikely” that Contreras will catch next season, Mozeliak told The Athletic, as the team plans to rely on younger catchers Iván Herrera and Pedro Pagés to handle duties behind the plate.
This shift also coincides with the departure of veteran Paul Goldschmidt, the former NL MVP and cornerstone first baseman, who entered free agency this offseason.

Despite Contreras’ solid offensive output since joining the team — hitting .263/.367/.468 with 35 home runs over two seasons — his defensive metrics, particularly framing and pop time, ranked below league average.
Shifting Contreras to first base reduces the physical strain, allowing him to focus on his offensive production while freeing up opportunities for emerging players like Alec Burleson and Jordan Walker.
Mozeliak emphasized that this role adjustment aligns with the Cardinals’ plans to cut back on payroll and increase the presence of young talent in the lineup.

With the Cardinals looking to “reset” their roster, this change could also make Contreras a more versatile asset if the team explores trade possibilities.
Mozeliak acknowledged that Contreras is committed to staying in St. Louis, but his position flexibility could attract interest from clubs seeking a proven bat with reduced defensive demands.
Additionally, the Cardinals may entertain trade discussions involving veterans like Nolan Arenado and Ryan Helsley, further committing to reshaping the team’s core.
