Report: NY Mets Make Massive Offer to Free Agent Willy Adames, 1 Other Team In the Mix
As opposed to past seasons, there is only one big-time shortstop on the free agent market this winter. Any team looking for a player of that ilk will be bidding big on former Milwaukee Brewers' slugger Willy Adames.
Count the NY Mets in on that list.
Wait, don't the Mets already have an MVP-candidate shortstop on their roster in Francisco Lindor?
The Mets' plan, according to MLB insider Mike Rodriguez, is to move Adames to third base (and, we assume, move breakout 3B Mark Vientos across the diamond to first base, in case their own 1B, Pete Alonso, does not re-sign).
In order to entice Adames to switch positions, the Mets are reportedly offering a 7-year, $160 million deal.
According to my sources, the #Mets have made an offer of over $160 million for a period of 7 years to Willy Adames. Their intention is for him to play third base; however, Adames is not convinced, as he prefers to continue in the shortstop position. He has not made a decision… pic.twitter.com/HB4JbuUHnH
As Rodriguez notes, however, Adames is "not convinced" of the position switch, preferring to remain at shortstop.
In addition, it sounds like he has another pretty hefty suitor in the Los Angeles Dodgers. The World Series champs CAN play Adames at short, a position they've been struggling to fill properly for a couple of seasons.
Adames, 29, posted career highs this past season with 32 homers and 112 RBIs.
