Report: Diamondbacks Receiving Trade Interest In Two Players

The Arizona Diamondbacks are drawing substantial trade interest in their outfielders, particularly Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas, as MLB teams search for quality center field options in a thin market. 

General Manager Mike Hazen confirmed the inquiries, emphasizing the demand. “We’ve gotten a lot of calls. There’s not many center fielders out there, is what I’m gathering,” Hazen said. 

While Corbin Carroll, the 2023 NL Rookie of the Year, is untouchable due to his cornerstone status, McCarthy and Thomas have emerged as plausible trade candidates. 

Both players offer years of team control through 2028 and the versatility to play multiple outfield spots, making them attractive in a market where such talent is scarce.

McCarthy, 27, is coming off a breakout 2024 season in which he slashed .285/.349/.400 with eight home runs, 25 stolen bases, and earned a Gold Glove nomination for his defense in right field. 

His speed, contact skills, and ability to play all three outfield positions make him a well-rounded option for teams needing a dependable everyday player. 

Thomas, 24, endured an injury-plagued season, limited to 39 games due to hamstring and oblique issues. Despite hitting just .200 during his limited campaign, Thomas remains a plus defender in center field and offers untapped offensive potential, making him a compelling "buy-low" candidate for clubs willing to bet on his upside.

Hazen has indicated that any trade would be aimed at improving the Diamondbacks’ major league roster for 2025, with needs at first base, designated hitter, and in the bullpen standing out. 

“We’ll take some risks in terms of trading out [years of] control for that,” Hazen said.

With outfield prospects like Druw Jones and Slade Caldwell waiting in the wings, Arizona is well-positioned to leverage its depth to address these areas.
