Report: Blue Jays Interested In Two Big-Name Free Agents

The Toronto Blue Jays are focusing on big offseason targets, with strong interest in free agents Alex Bregman and Luis Severino as they aim to retool after a disappointing 2024 campaign.

Bregman, a 31-year-old third baseman and two-time World Series champion, brings elite plate discipline and defensive versatility, making him a potential cornerstone for Toronto's infield.

With a career batting line of .272/.366/.483 and a reputation for leadership, Bregman could fill a crucial role alongside Bo Bichette on the left side of the diamond.

According to Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith, Bregman is "one of the top free agents available" and is open to moving to second base if needed, which would add flexibility to the Blue Jays’ roster. His presence would provide a consistent offensive boost and solidify a lineup that underperformed last season.

On the pitching side, the Blue Jays see 30-year-old right-hander Luis Severino as a valuable addition to their rotation.

Severino, who rebounded with the Mets in 2024, posted a 3.91 ERA over 182 innings in 32 starts, reestablishing himself as a reliable arm after years of injury setbacks.

Nicholson-Smith highlights Severino as a cost-effective option, projected to sign a three-year, $51 million deal, which would allow Toronto to strengthen a rotation led by José Berríos, Kevin Gausman, and Chris Bassitt.

Severino’s addition would not only add depth but also allow for greater bullpen flexibility by shifting unproven starters like Yariel Rodríguez into relief roles if needed.

While both players are priorities, their pursuit hinges on the Blue Jays’ interest in Juan Soto, the marquee free agent of the offseason.

President Mark Shapiro has emphasized a "similar budget to 2024" unless an exceptional opportunity arises, meaning Soto’s potential signing could limit flexibility for other moves.

However, missing out on Soto would enable the Blue Jays to pivot and address multiple areas of need with players like Bregman and Severino.
