Red Sox Sign Reliable Catcher To Address A Key Weakness

The Boston Red Sox have signed veteran catcher Seby Zavala to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Zavala, 31, brings five years of MLB experience with the Chicago White Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Seattle Mariners.

While his career .205/.271/.342 slash line with 15 home runs in 194 games highlights his offensive limitations, Zavala’s defensive prowess is a clear strength.

In 2024, he ranked in the 87th percentile for blocks above average and 77th percentile for pitch framing, making him a valuable addition to Boston’s catching depth.

The signing addresses an unsettled catching situation for the Red Sox, who currently have only Connor Wong and utility player Mickey Gasper on the 40-man roster.

Wong is expected to start in 2025, but top prospect Kyle Teel, who struggled at Triple-A Worcester, likely won’t be ready for Opening Day.

Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow acknowledged the need for reinforcements, saying, “We’ll certainly explore opportunities to get better, whether in a backup role to Connor or however things shake out.”

Zavala is expected to serve as defensive insurance at Triple-A while Boston continues searching for a more established backup catcher.

Zavala follows last offseason’s signings of veteran catchers to fortify the upper minors, a system that saw seven different players handle catching duties for Triple-A Worcester in 2024.

While Zavala’s offense may not move the needle, his defensive reliability could prove crucial in case of injuries or roster needs during the season.
