Philadelphia Phillies Cut All-Star Outfielder
Hays, 29, was brought in from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for reliever Seranthony Dominguez and outfielder Cristian Pache, with the Phillies banking on his strong track record against left-handed pitching to bolster their lineup.
However, injuries and illness plagued his brief stint in Philadelphia, limiting him to just 22 games. During that time, Hays slashed a modest .256/.275/.397 with two home runs and struggled to regain his 2023 All-Star form.

The Phillies had high hopes for Hays, but his tenure was derailed by a hamstring strain and a kidney infection, which impacted both his availability and effectiveness.
While he continued to shine against left-handed pitching, batting .444 in limited at-bats with the Phillies, his overall contributions fell short of expectations.
Reflecting on the decision, GM Sam Fuld stated, “It’s unfortunate how things unfolded for Austin. We were optimistic about what he could bring to our lineup, but circumstances beyond anyone’s control played a role here.”
Hays’ injury woes and inconsistent usage made him a non-tender candidate as the Phillies look to recalibrate their outfield mix ahead of 2025.
Austin Hays was informed he is being non-tendered by Phillies. Only 29, Hays suffered through a severe kidney infection after being traded to Philly. Only a year removed from an All Star and Gold Glove finalist season, he’ll be an interesting free agent.

Despite his struggles in 2024, Hays’ 2023 All-Star campaign, where he hit .275/.325/.444 with 16 home runs, and his career .277/.331/.469 line against lefties make him an intriguing free-agent option.
Teams in need of a low-cost, high-upside outfielder could view him as a potential bounce-back candidate, though reported off-field controversies might temper interest.
