MLB Trade Rumors: 5 Teams Listed As Alex Bregman Suitors
Alex Bregman is one of the top offensive players on the free agent market this winter, and once Juan Soto is gone, Bregman and Willy Adames will be all the rage for teams looking for a big offensive boost.
Bregman won his first Gold Glove in 2024 to go along with a strong second half that brought his season numbers up to respectable territory, though his on-base percentage (.315), OPS (.769) and OPS+ (118) were down a fair bit from his career averages. He still launched 26 homers, however, his highest total in five years.
MLB insider Jon Heyman told Bleacher Report on Wednesday that there are five teams he sees as possible suitors for the 30-year-old Bregman in free agency:
Detroit Tigers
Manager AJ Hinch "is close with Bregman" (from their Houston days) so that could be a positive factor in the Tigers' corner. They are looking to build on 2024's success. However, as Heyman notes, Detroit's 26-man playoff roster combined for a salary of $18.8 million this season. Yes, we said combined. Bregman will command much more than that himself in average annual salary on the free agent market, with $20M a year the floor, and $30M the ceiling. Would the Tigers be able to shell out that kind of money for one player?
Houston Astros
The Astros "have been trying hard" to re-sign their longtime third baseman, but it's not known yet if they'll be able to get it done.
New York Mets
There have been rumblings that the Mets, if they don't re-sign their own free agent Pete Alonso, could shift star rookie Mark Vientos across the diamond from third base to take over at 1B, leaving a big hole at the hot corner for Bregman.
New York Yankees
Third base is a problem spot for the Yankees, and has been for a few years now. But if they re-sign Juan Soto, and/or one of the high-priced starting pitchers out there on the market, would they have the money in the budget left for Bregman?
Seattle Mariners
The M's are well known to be looking for big bats this offseason as their offense cratered this past year. Heyman wonders if Bregman would want to head there, however, calling T-Mobile Park a "graveyard" for right-handed hitters.
