MLB Trade Rumors: 4 St. Louis Cardinals On The Trade Block
2024 didn't quite go like the St. Louis Cardinals had planned. They fell short of the postseason again for the second straight year—a rarity for them. In fact, they've made it to the playoffs no less than 17 times in the last 25 seasons.
According to USA Today baseball insider Bob Nightengale, the aging Cards are ready for what they're calling a "reset". Think of it as a kinder, gentler term for rebuild.
With that, he says they'll be parting with no less than 7 notable players. They'll let a trio of 37-year-olds hit the free agent in former All-Star first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and starting pitchers Lance Lynn and Kyle Gibson.
They'll also be putting four players on the trade block:
Nolan Arenado
The 10-time Gold Glover, 8-time All-Star and 5-time Silver Slugger, Arenado is going into his age 34 season. He still has three years left on his contract and owns a no-trade clause. Yet, we've already heard of one prominent team who could be interested in his services.
Sonny Gray
Another player who must waive his no-trade clause to be moved, Gray had a solid year in the first of his three-year, $75 million contract he signed in free agency last winter. He had a 3.84 ERA (which was a run higher than his previous season), but he had a better WHIP (1.08) and better strikeout numbers (11 K/9 and a 203:39 strikeout-to-walk ratio).
He has already stated that he has no intention of waiving his no-trade, but stranger things have happened, and let's wait and see what kind of trade offers come his way.
Miles Mikolas
He's 36, and will earn $18.5 million in 2025. He, too, has a no-trade clause. It could be tough finding takers, however, as Mikolas struggled in 2024 to the tune of a 5.35 ERA. He is a two-time All-Star, most recently in 2022.
Ryan Helsley
The All-Star closer is also on the trade block, per Nightengale. He's been in the MidSummer Classic twice in the last three years, and racked up a major league-leading 49 saves this season. The 30-year-old struck out 10.7 batters per nine, and posted a 2.04 ERA. Helsley is entering his final year of team control, however, but despite this would bring back a very nice haul for the Cards as one of the top closers in the game.
