MLB Trade Rumors: 3 Diamondbacks On Trade Block

The Arizona Diamondbacks were actually five games better in 2024 than 2023, but failed to make the playoffs after going on an improbable run to the World Series in '23.

They are looking at moves to make to ensure a return to the postseason. To that end, according to insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, three players are on the trade block as they look for improvements.

Jordan Montgomery

It was a disastrous year for the left-hander, and it all started with poor advice he feels he was given by his former agent Scott Boras (since fired), leaving him to sign on the eve of the regular season, wiping out his spring training. He was never able to get his mojo going in the desert, and finished the season with a 6.23 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP.

He picked up his $22.5 million player option for 2025, but Arizona is trying to see if another team is willing to take that on, based on his past success.

Alek Thomas

Once a top-flight prospect in the Snakes' system, Thomas had a disastrous age-24 season due to injuries and underperformance. He only got into 39 games at the major league level, and batted just .189 in that time. He is a strong defender in the outfield, and with a .317 average across six minor league seasons and an .891 OPS, he's young enough to still turn his career into something. It just might have to be with another organization.

Jake McCarthy

Unlike the previous two on this list, McCarthy actually had a fine season in 2024, slashing .285/.349/.400 with 25 stolen bases (96th percentile in baserunning speed) in 142 games, with a .749 OPS and a 109 OPS+.

His defense was good, finishing in the 90th percentile in Outs Above Average at +6, while scoring in the 98th percentile in sprint speed.

There are bound to be teams interested in McCarthy, if the price is right.
