MLB Rumors: Yankees Eyeing Free Agent Flamethrower

The New York Yankees are setting their sights on free-agent reliever Carlos Estévez to strengthen their bullpen for 2025, addressing potential gaps left by the possible departures of Clay Holmes, Tommy Kahnle, and Tim Hill.

Estévez, who split a highly effective 2024 season between the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies, impressed with a 2.45 ERA over 54 appearances.

With a 100-mph fastball and newfound control—reflected in a reduced 5.7% walk rate—Estévez has developed into a reliable late-inning arm.

His ability to limit opposing batters to a .198 average against his fastball, coupled with improved command, makes him an nice target for a Yankees bullpen that could use additional depth and versatility.

MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported that “Carlos Estévez is among the [many] free-agent relievers in whom the Yankees have interest,” noting New York’s aggressive approach to filling their bullpen needs early in the offseason.

With Luke Weaver’s $2.5 million option exercised, the Yankees may start him as their primary closer, but Estévez's strong credentials make him a contender for that role.

Despite limited postseason experience, Estévez’s steady performance and All-Star-caliber metrics over the past two years suggest he could excel in high-pressure situations, whether as a setup option or closer.

Projected to command a three-year, $27 million deal, Estévez offers value as both a dependable setup man and a potential closer.

His consistent results and ability to handle both right- and left-handed hitters align with what the Yankees need to stabilize their bullpen.
