MLB Rumors: Royals Have Checked In On Two Big-Name Offensive Players

The Kansas City Royals are exploring offensive upgrades this offseason, focusing on Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm and Los Angeles Angels outfielder Taylor Ward as key trade targets.

According to Anne Rogers of MLB.com, the Royals have "checked in" on both players, though discussions remain preliminary.

After a surprising 2024 playoff run, Kansas City aims to capitalize on its momentum by bolstering its lineup with right-handed bats that offer both power and consistency. Both Bohm and Ward align with the Royals’ need for controlled, proven hitters as they build around stars like Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez.

Bohm, 28, would bring much-needed stability and production to third base, where incumbent Maikel Garcia offers strong defense but limited offensive upside.

Bohm slashed .280/.332/.448 with 15 home runs, 44 doubles, and 97 RBIs in 2024, earning his first All-Star selection.

With strong contact-hitting ability and improved defensive metrics, Bohm is projected to earn $8.1 million in arbitration for 2025, a reasonable figure for Kansas City’s mid-tier payroll. “A guy like Alec Bohm in the middle of their lineup could do some damage,” noted Rogers, particularly with Witt Jr.’s ability to get on base ahead of him.

Ward, 30, provides another intriguing option, offering a power boost to an outfield that struggled offensively in 2024.

He hit a career-high 25 home runs with 75 RBIs while maintaining a .748 OPS, showcasing the pop the Royals need after ranking 20th in wRC+ last season.

Under team control through 2026, Ward’s versatility in the outfield makes him a natural fit alongside defensive standout Kyle Isbel.
