MLB Rumors: Rival Predicts This Team Signs Alex Bregman

Buster Olney of ESPN has ignited speculation around Alex Bregman potentially joining the Philadelphia Phillies, suggesting the All-Star third baseman could be a transformative addition for the franchise.

A rival evaluator told Olney that the Phillies might be serious contenders to sign Bregman, who recently completed a five-year, $100 million deal with the Houston Astros and is now seeking a contract worth around $30 million per year.

With Philadelphia’s projected payroll at $266.5 million—currently the highest in the league—Olney noted that the Phillies have key contracts expiring soon, giving them flexibility to make a big move.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Philadelphia’s front office, led by Dave Dombrowski, is “willing to make a huge move to change their fate” and end their World Series drought in the Bryce Harper era.

The Phillies are reportedly open to trading current third baseman Alec Bohm, who delivered strong regular-season numbers but faltered in the postseason.

Bohm’s struggles in high-pressure moments have contributed to scouts’ assessments that Philadelphia’s lineup needs more consistency and balance.

Bregman’s veteran experience, including 99 playoff games and two World Series titles, could address those needs.

“Bregman would bring exactly the disciplined, contact-driven approach the Phillies are looking for,” said Olney, pointing to Bregman’s reputation for low strikeouts and his recent Gold Glove.

While the Astros remain committed to retaining Bregman—both GM Dana Brown and teammate Jose Altuve have emphasized his value to the team—Philadelphia’s interest adds significant intrigue to the offseason.

Signing Bregman would cost the Phillies draft capital due to Houston’s qualifying offer, but his combination of offensive patience, defensive skill, and championship experience could make him the ideal addition to push the Phillies deeper into October.
