MLB Rumors: Orioles "Eyeing" All-Star Catcher

The Baltimore Orioles are reportedly targeting veteran catcher Elias Díaz, a former All-Star and the 2023 MLB All-Star Game MVP, to strengthen their roster for the 2025 season.

Díaz, 33, is remembered for his clutch two-run homer off Orioles closer Félix Bautista in the 2023 All-Star Game, securing a dramatic 3-2 victory for the National League and earning MVP honors.

Though his offensive production dipped in 2024, splitting time between the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres, Díaz still posted a solid .270 batting average with five home runs and 36 RBIs in 84 games.

Bringing defensive reliability and veteran leadership, Díaz is seen as an ideal complement to young star Adley Rutschman behind the plate.

Orioles General Manager Mike Elias recently emphasized the team’s focus on bolstering their catching depth after James McCann hit free agency.

“We need more catching to go with Adley Rutschman,” Elias told MLB Network Radio, noting the importance of finding a dependable partner for their All-Star catcher.

While McCann remains an option, reports suggest Díaz, along with free agents Gary Sánchez and Reese McGuire, is under serious consideration.

Díaz’s ability to manage a pitching staff, along with his leadership and timely hitting, makes him an appealing short-term solution as the Orioles prepare for the arrival of top prospect Samuel Basallo, who is nearing MLB readiness.

Analysts point out that Díaz’s defensive skills and veteran presence could be invaluable for guiding the Orioles’ young pitching staff.
