MLB Rumors: Insider Links Nolan Arenado To Surprising Team

The Detroit Tigers have emerged as a potential destination for St. Louis Cardinals star third baseman Nolan Arenado, according to MLB insider Jon Morosi.

As the Cardinals explore trading the 10-time Gold Glove winner in their offseason retooling, Detroit’s need for a right-handed bat and veteran leadership makes them an intriguing fit.

Arenado’s elite defensive prowess—he ranked in the 95th percentile for outs above average in 2024—and his openness to playing first base add to his appeal.

However, the Tigers might request the Cardinals to include cash in any potential deal to offset the $52 million remaining on Arenado’s contract. “The Tigers, known to be seeking right-handed bats, are one possible fit,” Morosi noted.

Despite Arenado’s defensive excellence, his offensive production has declined over the past two seasons, with his OPS dropping to a career-low .719 in 2024.

Critics, including Zachary Rotman of USA Today, argue that Detroit might be better served pursuing younger, more impactful free agents like Pete Alonso or Christian Walker.

Moving Arenado to first base, where offensive expectations are higher, could further diminish his value, especially at pitcher-friendly Comerica Park.

Still, Arenado’s veteran leadership and championship pedigree could be invaluable to a Tigers team aiming to build on its surprising 2024 playoff run.

After upsetting the Houston Astros in the Wild Card Series and pushing the Cleveland Guardians to five games in the ALDS, Detroit appears ready to compete.
