MLB Rumors: Cubs Linked to Versatile Free Agent Who's Willing To Play Catcher

The Chicago Cubs have been linked to free agent Ty France as a potential versatile bench option, according to Audrey Toscano of Fansided

Known primarily as a first baseman, France has experience at second and third base and has expressed a willingness to train as a catcher—a position he has not played professionally but briefly prepared for with the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners.

This flexibility makes him an intriguing candidate for the Cubs, who are looking to add to their depth this offseason.

MLB.com's Mark Feinsand reports that France has already received at least one guaranteed offer and is drawing interest from more than ten teams, highlighting his market appeal.

While France struggled defensively in 2024, allowing seven runs above average at first base per Defensive Runs Saved, his openness to a utility role, including emergency catching, could provide value to a Cubs roster seeking versatility.

Offensively, France's recent performance has been inconsistent, as he posted a .251/.292/.391 slash line in limited action with the Cincinnati Reds in 2024.

However, his career track record includes a .284 batting average and a .354 on-base percentage during his peak years with the Mariners, suggesting he still has potential to be a productive hitter.

“France’s flexibility could be a low-cost solution for teams needing depth,” Toscano notes, making him a compelling option for the Cubs.

If signed, France would likely fill a utility role rather than a starting one, offering insurance at multiple positions while aiming to rediscover his offensive form.
