MLB Rumors: Astros Interested In One Of The Most Coveted Free Agents

The Houston Astros are reportedly showing strong interest in free-agent shortstop Willy Adames as they prepare for a big offseason.

With franchise cornerstone Alex Bregman potentially leaving in free agency, General Manager Dana Brown has emphasized the importance of contingency plans to maintain the team’s competitive edge.

According to MLB Network’s Jon Morosi, the Astros view Adames as a viable replacement for Bregman at third base, despite his lack of experience at the position.

“You put Adames potentially at third, Peña at short, Altuve at second—I would love that infield,” Morosi said.

Adames’ career-best 2024 season, in which he hit 32 home runs and drove in 112 runs, has made him one of the most coveted free agents this offseason.

Adames’ willingness to switch positions has broadened his market appeal, with the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays among other teams reportedly interested.

While he has played exclusively as a shortstop in his MLB career, his power and versatility make him a natural fit for Houston’s infield needs.

Pairing Adames with José Altuve and Jeremy Peña could help the Astros maintain a strong defensive and offensive core, even if Bregman departs.

“Interest in him is very broad,” Morosi noted, highlighting the widespread appeal of Adames’ offensive upside and defensive reliability.

A potential deal for the 29-year-old would likely require a significant investment, with projections estimating a six-year, $150 million contract.

However, the Astros are no strangers to making bold moves, and adding Adames would reaffirm their commitment to sustaining their championship aspirations.

“We would love for Alex to come back,” Brown said, “but we have to prepare for every possibility.”
