MLB Rumors: AL East Team Has "Checked On" Pete Alonso

The New York Yankees have reportedly checked in on Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso as he heads toward free agency, positioning him as a possible solution to their vacancy at first base.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman recently acknowledged discussions with Alonso's agent, Scott Boras, who also represents the Yankees' top offseason target, outfielder Juan Soto.

“There’s a lot of high-quality players in this marketplace, and certainly Pete did an amazing job with the Mets,” Cashman remarked.

With Alonso expected to decline the Mets’ $21.05 million qualifying offer and coming off a season where he hit .240 with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs, the Yankees see him as a power bat who could replace the recently-departed Anthony Rizzo.

If Soto, who is reportedly seeking a record-breaking contract, lands with the Mets, the Yankees’ interest in Alonso could intensify as a strategic counter-move.

ESPN’s Buster Olney speculated that if Soto signs with their crosstown rivals, Boras will likely urge the Yankees to pursue Alonso to “fill in the power gap” left by a missed Soto signing.

The rivalry could turn into a high-stakes battle for one or both sluggers, particularly with the Mets aiming to capitalize on their recent NLCS success and the Yankees eager to retool their roster for a championship run.

The Mets, however, remain hopeful about retaining Alonso.

Team president David Stearns has expressed a desire to bring him back, saying, “He’s a great Met. I hope we have him back.”

Yet, Alonso reportedly turned down a seven-year, $158 million extension from the Mets last year, suggesting he's aiming for a higher offer, potentially around $189 million.
