MLB Rumors: 1 Team Out Of The Juan Soto Sweepstakes

The Philadelphia Phillies, initially rumored as a strong contender for superstar free agent Juan Soto, now appear to be out of the running entirely.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Phillies “haven’t had a single conversation” with Soto’s agent, Scott Boras, despite earlier reports from Jon Heyman of the New York Post suggesting the team had planned a meeting.

This surprising lack of engagement casts serious doubt on their interest in the four-time All-Star, despite the obvious fit Soto would bring to a power-heavy lineup featuring Bryce Harper and Trea Turner.

Philadelphia’s financial strategy seems to be the driving factor behind their decision.

While Soto’s bat would perfectly complement Citizens Bank Park’s hitter-friendly dimensions and reunite him with former Washington Nationals teammates and hitting coach Kevin Long, the Phillies are reportedly focused on maintaining payroll flexibility.

Potential moves involving players like Nick Castellanos and Alec Bohm highlight the team’s desire to stay below luxury tax thresholds.

As Nightengale notes, Soto’s massive price tag—likely exceeding $40 million annually—appears to have been “a long shot” for the Phillies, even with their considerable financial muscle.

Meanwhile, the New York Mets have emerged as the “clear-cut favorite” to land Soto, with other serious contenders including the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, and Boston Red Sox.
