MLB Free Agent Rumors: Top 3 Landing Spots for Alex Bregman
Alex Bregman had a dreadful start to the 2024 season, but finished his walk year strong. Still, despite a stellar career at third base in Houston, his underlying numbers are trending downward as he's now on the wrong side of 30. His on-base percentage, slugging, walks, OPS and OPS+ have all continued to decrease in each of the last two seasons, though in the OPS cases, are still sound.
Nevertheless, some expect he'll command a free agent contract worth somewhere close to $200 million. Will the Astros dare go that high? There will be other teams angling to steal the nine-year veteran from Houston, and with that, we look at the top 3 landing spots for Bregman, if he doesn't return to the only team he's called home during his career.
Detroit Tigers
A team on the rise, the Tigers are hoping to make a big splash this winter to keep their upward trajectory going in that 'upward' direction. The team finished well into the bottom third of the majors in all offensive categories from its third basemen in 2024. Bregman would be a natural fit in the Motor City.
Seattle Mariners
Yet another hopeful playoff contender whose third sackers finished near the bottom of the league in offense. The M's have been trying to find the right fit at third, it seems like, for years. Bregman could potentially solve that issue for many seasons to come.
Washington Nationals
If you thought the previous two teams struggled with offense from the hot corner, the Nationals are simply saying, 'hold my beer." They were dead last in home runs from their third basemen, with just 7, and second-last in all of baseball ahead of only the woeful White Sox in OPS and slugging. They figure to be a team that's on the rise, with a slew of impressive young talent, and adding a veteran leader like Bregman with a couple of World Series rings could go a long way to helping take the young Nats to the next level.
