Los Angeles Angels Claim Versatile Player Off Waivers From Athletics

The Los Angeles Angels have added to their roster for the 2025 season by claiming first baseman Ryan Noda off waivers from the Oakland Athletics.

Known for his patient, "three-true-outcomes" approach—walks, strikeouts, and home runs—Noda first made an impression with Oakland as a Rule 5 pick from the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023, leading the A’s in on-base percentage and walk rate.

“Ryan’s a disciplined hitter with power potential, and his defensive skills at first give us much-needed depth,” said Angels GM Perry Minasian.

Although Noda struggled in the majors last season, he found his rhythm in Triple-A, posting a .391 on-base percentage with 22 home runs, reaffirming his potential to contribute at the plate.

Noda joins a competitive mix at first base for the Angels, including fellow left-handed hitters Nolan Schanuel and Niko Kavadas.

Schanuel’s high-contact, low-strikeout style contrasts with Noda’s powerful, selective approach, creating a balanced dynamic within the position group.

“He’s an on-base machine and a sound defender at first,” an Angels representative added, emphasizing Noda’s ability to bring stability on defense.

Noda’s versatility also allows him to handle occasional outfield duties, giving the Angels further flexibility as they look to strengthen their lineup options.

The acquisition of Noda aligns with the Angels' offseason goal of building depth and versatility.

With the recent addition of versatile infielder Scott Kingery, the Angels have reinforced multiple positions on the field, providing Minasian with adaptable roster options heading into Spring Training.

"We’re adding pieces to compete and improve overall roster depth," Minasian explained, expressing optimism for how these new additions will help the Angels address past gaps and prepare for a stronger season in 2025.
