Blue Jays' Chances Of Signing Guerrero Jr. Dwindle After Insider Reveals Massive Price Tag
Are the Toronto Blue Jays ready to give out a contract worth well over twice as much as their previous largest deal ever handed out? If not, they are not likely to be able to re-sign Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Jays first baseman could be seeking a massive deal worth $350 million. The biggest contract the team has ever agreed to in the past was the $150 million deal they gave George Springer almost four years ago.
According to Heyman in The New York Post:
The price tag (for a Guerrero extension) is likely to hit $350M.
This flies in the face of what baseball contract experts Spotrac have set as Vladdy's market value, which is $260 million over 10 years.
There are already rumors that the Jays will consider trading him this winter if they can't re-sign him before he enters his walk year in 2025, as Heyman has Guerrero listed as his #4 Trade Candidate this offseason from around baseball.
For a more positive spin on things for Toronto fans, for what it's worth, former MLB GM and current MLB Network Radio analyst Jim Duquette thinks the $250 million range could get a Vladdy done in Toronto for a 10-12-year contract.
Needless to say, the questions surrounding their ability to sign Guerrero Jr. make any thoughts of the Jays coming to some sort of agreement with top free agent superstar Juan Soto, who they've also been absurdly linked to this offseason, as extremely remote — let's say slim to none.
