Insider Links Pete Alonso To Blue Jays in Free Agency

It's pretty obvious that the New York Mets and their crosstown rivals the New York Yankees are the top contenders for slugger Pete Alonso in free agency this winter. Both teams have a big void at first base (the Mets, because that's Alonso's spot, and the Yankees, because Anthony Rizzo is pretty close to being washed).

But insider Jon Heyman dropped a hint in his latest rumblings in the New York Post that the Toronto Blue Jays—who don't currently have an opening at first base—could be a landing spot for Alonso as well.

The Blue Jays are open to moving Vlad Guerrero Jr. from first base to third, which could potentially open up a spot for Pete Alonso.

Heyman's suggestion that Toronto would be "open" to moving Guerrero Jr. from first base (where he won a Gold Glove in 2022) back to his original corner across the diamond makes a bit of sense after watching him get a little 12-game cameo late in the 2024 season for his first substantial look at the hot corner since 2019. He fared well enough back at third for that very small sample size.

There is plenty of talk that the Jays will try to make a run at top free agent Juan Soto this winter, just like they did (and failed) last year with Shohei Ohtani. They still have that $700 million burning a hole in their pockets. But perhaps if Soto isn't looking like a real possibility, they could pivot and earmark a couple hundred million of that for Alonso?

Adding Alonso's power to a lineup with Vladdy would be a big boon to a Jays lineup that was woefully anemic this past season (save for Guerrero).
