Chicago Cubs DFA Former Promising Closer

The Chicago Cubs have designated right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay for assignment, likely closing the chapter on his 12-year tenure with the organization.

Signed out of Venezuela at age 18, Alzolay rose through the Cubs’ system and became a key bullpen piece, particularly during a stellar 2023 season in which he recorded 22 saves, a 2.67 ERA, and a 26.5% strikeout rate over 64 innings.

However, injuries derailed his promising trajectory. After struggling with forearm issues late in 2023, Alzolay endured a disastrous 2024 campaign, posting a 4.67 ERA in just 17.1 innings before landing on the injured list in May.

His season ended with Tommy John surgery in August, sidelining him through at least 2025.

The Cubs’ decision to designate Alzolay stems from the need to clear a spot on their 40-man roster as they prepare for the Rule 5 Draft and aim to protect top prospects like Owen Caissie.

Carrying Alzolay during his extensive recovery was deemed unfeasible, particularly with his projected $2.3 million arbitration salary for 2025.

“Without an injured list during the offseason, he would count against their roster for the next two years, even though he may not pitch until 2026,” explained ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.

While Alzolay’s future with the Cubs appears over, his impressive 2023 campaign and prior success could make him an appealing reclamation project for other teams.

The Cubs could explore a trade for a marginal prospect, but if unclaimed on waivers, Alzolay could become a free agent and seek a fresh start.

“It’s a tough blow for someone who was such a key piece of our bullpen just a year ago,” one team insider noted.
