Top 3 Third Baseman On Free Agent Market This Winter
The free agent market is loaded at first base this offseason, but looking across the diamond at the hot corner, and it's basically one-and-done for any teams looking for an impact player at third.
After the top player on our list, it's utility men mostly that round out the available candidates.
Time for our Top 3 Third Baseman on the free agent market this winter:
Alex Bregman
The Houston Astros veteran has this corner of the market all to himself. After getting off to an ice-cold start to the season (batting .204 as late as May 25), Bregman posted an .833 OPS in the second half, and finished the season with numbers approximating his usual output with a .260 average and 26 dingers. His 118 OPS+ was down from his career mark of 132, but he showed he's still a force to be dealt with, even as he crossed the age-30 plateau.
While another pending UFA 3B, Matt Chapman earned a $150+ million contract with the San Francisco Giants late this season, it feels like Bregman could possibly top that (and you can be sure with Scott Boras as his agent, he'll certainly try).
Gio Urshela
Urshela had a few nice seasons as a regular with the New York Yankees and then one with the Minnesota Twins. But those were all several years ago. Now, at age 33, Urshela is more of a utility player who can help out on either corner, and maybe a little at shortstop.
Enrique (Kike) Hernández
The Dodgers super utility guy had another of his typical seasons in 2024, playing every position on the diamond except catcher (and somehow didn't get a game in RF). He popped 12 homers, but the postseason is where he thrives, and he's done it again this year for the Dodgers. Any team looking for a veteran playoff performer and leader will look to the 33-year-old as a nice signing, though you'd think that the Dodgers, for whom the postseason is the most important time of year each season, would look to keep him.
