Philadelphia Phillies Sign 4-year Veteran Pitcher

The Philadelphia Phillies have signed right-handed pitcher Cody Stashak to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training, as reported by The Athletic’s Matt Gelb.

Stashak, a former Minnesota Twin, made an impressive MLB debut in 2019, posting a 3.24 ERA and a 3.01 FIP across 25 innings while walking only one batter—a testament to his exceptional command.

With an ability to limit walks and maintain a strong strikeout rate, Stashak followed up with another solid season in 2020, recording a 3.00 ERA and a nearly 30% strikeout rate, showcasing his early value as a reliable bullpen arm.

Unfortunately, injuries derailed his promising career, beginning with a back issue in 2021 and culminating in a torn labrum that required surgery in 2022.

After his recovery, Stashak played briefly in the Atlantic League before signing with the San Francisco Giants, where he pitched in Triple-A, posting a 5.45 ERA over 36 innings.

Despite these struggles, his underlying numbers—such as a 27.2% strikeout rate and a low 7.4% walk rate—hint at the control and potential that once set him apart.

Gelb noted, “His trademark control was on display,” suggesting that if he can regain consistency, Stashak could find his footing once more.

With free agents like Jeff Hoffman and Carlos Estevez possibly departing, the Phillies view Stashak as a potential low-risk, high-reward addition to their bullpen.

A New Jersey native, Stashak will have a shot to compete for a roster spot during Spring Training, where his ability to throw strikes will be closely watched.
