MLB Trade Rumors: Paul Goldschmidt Linked To Two New Teams

Erik Beaston of Bleacher Report has linked St. Louis Cardinals veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to both the Seattle Mariners and Chicago Cubs as potential landing spots this offseason.

With the Cardinals reportedly set to part ways with Goldschmidt as they look to reset for 2025, teams in need of a veteran presence at first base may find him an attractive option despite his subpar 2024 campaign.

Beaston points out that, while Goldschmidt's production has dipped, his experience and leadership could still make him a valuable asset for teams looking to upgrade their lineups.

Over the past two seasons, the 37-year-old has slashed .257/.333/.430, with 47 home runs, 145 RBIs, 22 stolen bases, and 159 runs scored across 308 games played.

The Mariners, who have expressed interest in free agent Pete Alonso, are considered a particularly intriguing fit.

Beaston notes that if Alonso signs elsewhere, "Seattle could see Goldschmidt as a viable alternative" to fill their first base need.

Similarly, the Cubs are in the market for stability at first base and could turn to Goldschmidt as a backup plan if they miss out on other top free agents.

Ultimately, Beaston suggests that Goldschmidt's landing spot "may depend on where the bigger dominoes fall," particularly Alonso's free agency decision.
