MLB Trade Rumors: Paul Goldschmidt "Could Be Great Fit" With AL Team
After six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, Goldschmidt is expected to part ways with the team, as reported by The Athletic’s Katie Woo, as the Cardinals look to reset their roster for 2025.
Despite a disappointing 2024 campaign where Goldschmidt posted a .245 batting average and 65 RBIs, his strong finish—hitting .275 in September—shows he still has something left in the tank.
As the Mariners search for a solution at first base, Goldschmidt could be a cost-effective, short-term addition to help fill a critical void.

Seattle’s top offseason priority remains signing Pete Alonso, but if Alonso opts to sign elsewhere, Bleacher Report notes that the Mariners "could realistically be in the mix" for Goldschmidt.
With Ty France, Justin Turner, and Luke Raley underperforming at first base in 2024, Goldschmidt would provide a veteran presence and stability at the position, even if he isn’t a long-term solution.
His late-season resurgence, which included five hits, three doubles, a home run, and four RBIs in his final three games, adds to his appeal as a valuable stopgap while Seattle continues to build its roster.

A one- or two-year deal for Goldschmidt could offer the Mariners flexibility as they aim to rebound from a disappointing 2024 season and push toward their first World Series appearance.
While he may not return to his MVP form, his pedigree and experience would be invaluable to a team eager to make a deep postseason run.
Goldschmidt's age and recent struggles might actually make him more affordable, and as Bleacher Report highlights, he could be “the perfect fallback option” if Seattle misses out on Alonso.
