MLB Trade Rumors: 2 Trade Targets For Pirates
According to Danny Demilio, Pirates General Manager Ben Cherington is focused on adding offense to build a playoff-caliber roster for 2025, making first base a top priority.
With free agents like Pete Alonso and Christian Walker likely out of financial reach, Mountcastle and O’Hearn offer more attainable options.
As Demilio puts it, "If the Pirates want a meaningful upgrade at the position instead of patchwork with no long-term solution in sight, parting with young assets as part of trades could be the way to go."

Mountcastle, 27, has been a steady offensive producer, batting .271 with a .733 OPS, 30 doubles, and 13 home runs in 2024, while also improving defensively.
He is under team control through 2026, with a projected $6.6 million arbitration salary. O'Hearn, 31, has posted a .275/.329/.450 slash line over the past two seasons, offering solid left-handed power but less defensive versatility.
His $8 million club option for 2025 makes him a feasible short-term option for Pittsburgh. Demilio notes, "O’Hearn might be an even likelier trade candidate" due to Baltimore’s position player depth.
"Every time the O's win, I'm fantastic."

With the Orioles seeking starting pitching to replace ace Corbin Burnes, who is entering free agency, the Pirates' depth in both the major league rotation and upper minors could align well for a deal.
The two teams have a recent trade history, setting the stage for another possible agreement this winter. Demilio suggests, “Maybe Cherington will call Mike Elias once again to acquire an established big-leaguer to help the Pirates in 2025.”
