MLB Rumors: Yankees "Plan B" Player Revealed If Juan Soto Leaves

If the New York Yankees lose Juan Soto to free agency, they have a powerful "Plan B" ready to keep the team competitive.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Yankees would pivot to pursuing New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso as a high-profile addition.

Alonso's power and battle-tested presence in New York make him an appealing option, though his right-handed bat could tilt the Yankees' lineup further in that direction, joining Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.

As Heyman points out, “Alonso…could make a worthy complement to Soto, but he’s an imperfect fit as the Soto replacement.”

The Yankees' contingency plan doesn’t stop with Alonso.

They’re also reportedly eyeing former Cy Young winners Corbin Burnes and Blake Snell to fortify their pitching rotation.

In addition, switch-hitter Anthony Santander and October-tested infielder Alex Bregman are on their radar to bring versatility and postseason experience to the lineup.

“Bregman’s bonus is that he’s often an October standout—something needed around here,” Heyman notes, highlighting the Yankees' intent to build a balanced and resilient roster if Soto moves on.

This multi-star approach would let the Yankees invest in several impactful players rather than one megastar contract, ensuring flexibility and depth.

While re-signing Soto remains their top priority, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner is determined to keep the team in contention, positioning the club to either retain their star outfielder or reload aggressively with a mix of elite talent across the board.
