MLB Rumors: Reunion With Former Team Could Be In The Works For Whit Merrifield

Whit Merrifield's recent comments about his time with the Atlanta Braves have fueled speculation that a reunion could be in the works this offseason.

The veteran utility infielder, who joined the Braves in mid-2024 after being cut by the Philadelphia Phillies, embraced his role in Atlanta, stepping up as the starting second baseman when Ozzie Albies went down with an injury.

Despite posting a modest .248/.348/.336 slash line over 42 games, Merrifield valued his time with the Braves, describing it as "a treat" and praising the strong clubhouse culture. "It was a great team as well – a great group of guys. I have nothing bad to say about them," he said, reflecting on his brief tenure.

A native of North Carolina, Merrifield's connection to the southeastern U.S. made his time in Atlanta even more special. Having grown up cheering for the Braves, he found himself warmly embraced by family, friends, and fans alike during his two-plus months with the team.

"My phone has never blown up as much as it had those two-plus months I was in Atlanta," he recalled. His most memorable moment came when he faced the Phillies—the team that had let him go—and collected a double and a triple off ace Zack Wheeler.

"To contribute and play well against a team that told you that you weren’t good enough... it feels good," Merrifield added.

While Merrifield isn't expected to be a top offseason priority for the Braves, his versatility and veteran leadership could make him an appealing option as the team looks to bolster its depth ahead of the 2025 season.

The 35-year-old utility player hinted at the possibility of a return, saying, "We’ll see what the future holds."
