MLB Rumors: Multiple Red Sox Teammates "Upset" With Kenley Jansen

Kenley Jansen's early departure from the Boston Red Sox before the end of the 2024 season has caused some frustration among his teammates.

After being placed on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, Jansen left the team ahead of their final series against the Tampa Bay Rays, a move that multiple players found disappointing.

According to MassLive’s Sean McAdam, several teammates, speaking anonymously, expressed their frustration, with one player noting, "I can't say I'm too surprised."

Jansen had reportedly been somewhat aloof throughout the season, even struggling to remember some teammates' names, which only added to the growing sense of disconnect in the clubhouse.

While other injured players, such as Rafael Devers, Lucas Giolito, and Garrett Whitlock, remained with the team through the final games, Jansen’s decision to leave early stood out.

One player mentioned that Jansen had announced before a doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins that he would pitch in the first game and then be done for the year.

After fulfilling his word and pitching the ninth inning of a blowout win, Jansen packed up and left, a move that reportedly rubbed many teammates the wrong way, especially as the Red Sox were still fighting to stay competitive at the time.

The removal of Jansen’s nameplate from his locker further fueled the sense of frustration among the team.

Manager Alex Cora defended Jansen, explaining that he had given him permission to leave due to personal matters, stating, “I told Kenley to go home. So if they’re upset, they should come to my office and ask me.”

However, the overall sentiment in the clubhouse suggested many were not pleased with how the situation unfolded, especially given Jansen’s veteran status and significant role on the team.

With Jansen set to become a free agent this offseason, it seems likely that his time with the Red Sox has come to a contentious end.
