MLB Rumors: Mets President Reveals Who They'll Target This Offseason
With Sean Manaea, Luis Severino, and José Quintana set to leave in free agency, Stearns emphasized the need to replace their combined 37% of innings from 2024, saying, “We’re going to have to add starting pitching. We have to add multiple starters.”
With only Kodai Senga, David Peterson, and Tylor Megill under contract, the Mets face significant rotation holes that must be filled to maintain competitiveness.
"The entirety of the player universe is potentially accessible to us. That's an enormous opportunity. I envision us taking advantage of that opportunity and being aggressive in certain spaces."

Despite having roughly $200 million coming off the books, Stearns signaled a cautious approach, aiming for short-term deals or trades to avoid “hamstringing” the team with long, risky contracts.
Stearns also left room for exceptions, noting that they could explore big names if the right opportunity arises. “If we think we can identify [a good long-term investment], then there could be exceptions,” he added, hinting that the Mets might pursue free agents like Corbin Burnes, Max Fried, or Blake Snell.
Potential trade targets could include Garrett Crochet or Sonny Gray, further emphasizing the urgency to rebuild the rotation.
"This year has been a frustrating year with injuries and things not going my way. Definitely, I would like to come back next year stronger than ever."

While Stearns did not confirm any specific targets, speculation about the Mets’ plans extends beyond the pitching staff.
There’s potential interest in outfielder Juan Soto to improve offensive depth, but Stearns reiterated the importance of "sustainable competitiveness."
With significant financial flexibility and a projected payroll between $160-180 million, the Mets are set up to be aggressive this winter, particularly in pursuing top-tier starting pitchers to ensure a strong 2025 roster.
