MLB Rumors: Latest Free Agency Rumblings On 3 Star Players

The latest offseason buzz centers on three marquee MLB free agents: Paul Goldschmidt, Corbin Burnes, and Alex Bregman, according to Erik Beaston of Bleacher Report

Goldschmidt, a seven-time All-Star and 2022 NL MVP, is expected to move on from the St. Louis Cardinals after a disappointing 2024 campaign where he posted career lows in batting average (.245), home runs (22), and RBIs (65).

The Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners are both pursuing the veteran first baseman, but Beaston sees Seattle as the stronger fit, suggesting, “A change of scenery and a young clubhouse could reinvigorate him.”

Meanwhile, Corbin Burnes is coming off a Cy Young-worthy season with the Baltimore Orioles, yet he might still be on the move as the Orioles hesitate on long-term deals for pitchers.

The Chicago Cubs are emerging as a strong suitor for Burnes, with the potential for a reunion with manager Craig Counsell, who coached Burnes during his 2021 Cy Young season with the Milwaukee Brewers.

“If the Orioles can’t make a rare multiyear deal happen, Burnes to the Cubs makes perfect sense,” Beaston notes.

Alex Bregman is attracting interest from the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers, but the Houston Astros are determined to keep their longtime third baseman.

After hitting 26 home runs and delivering clutch postseason performances in 2024, Bregman remains a valuable asset to Houston’s lineup.

Beaston believes the Astros will push hard to retain him, predicting, “If Houston can muster the money, it feels unlikely that Bregman will leave the only organization he has ever known.”
