Former Top Prospect Elects Free Agency For 1st Time In Career

Former top prospect Tucker Davidson has elected free agency after being designated for assignment by the Baltimore Orioles at the conclusion of the 2024 season.

Once ranked as the No. 10 prospect in the Atlanta Braves' system, the 28-year-old left-hander has experienced a tumultuous MLB career, bouncing between the Braves, Angels, Royals, and Orioles.

In 2024, Davidson saw limited major league action, pitching 4.2 scoreless innings for Baltimore, but spent most of the year with their Triple-A affiliate in Norfolk, where he posted a solid 3.89 ERA over 115.2 innings.

Davidson's season in Norfolk showcased his versatility, though he excelled more in relief than as a starter. Out of the bullpen, he recorded an impressive 2.45 ERA across 44 innings, compared to a 4.48 ERA as a starter.

This marked improvement was largely credited to a revamped pitch mix. "The Orioles had him scale back the usage of both his four-seamer and slider while adding a sinker and splitter," according to MLB Trade Rumors

The changes appeared to pay off, as Davidson's relief work drew attention despite his struggles as a starter.

As Davidson enters free agency, his blend of starting and relief experience, combined with his improved pitch repertoire, makes him an intriguing option for teams in need of pitching depth.

While his overall major league numbers—5.76 ERA in 129.2 innings—have been inconsistent, his recent adjustments offer cautious optimism.
