11 Teams Have Already Checked In On Juan Soto After His Cold Comments About Free Agency
While his teammates were drowning in their sorrows about just losing the World Series, Juan Soto was making some cold, sobering comments to the media about his intentions this offseason as a free agent.
I'm going to be available for all 30 teams. I don’t want to say anybody has any advantage because at the end of the day, we’re going to look at what they have and how much they want me.
i.e.: 'Show me the money!' is really what Soto was saying. No advantage for the Yankees, apparently, just whoever plops the largest bag on the table.
And according to insider Jon Heyman, that bag better hold at least $700 million dollars, or it's likely that Soto and his notorious agent Scott Boras won't be sitting at the table for long. Heyman says at least 11 teams had already checked in on Soto's availability by Thursday morning, just hours after the sting of the World Series defeat was still fresh at Yankee Stadium.
The crosstown NY Mets, and the LA Dodgers, who just made short, five-game work of the Yanks in the Series, could be the top contenders for Soto's services along with the Pinstripers.
Soto threw one little bone the Yankees' way before departing, saying "I’m really happy with the city, with the team. But at the end of the day, we will see,” he said. “We’re going to look at every situation, every offer and [make] a decision from there.”
One noted baseball insider, however, said recently that the Yankees are "absolutely not" a certainty to retain him.
The $700 million mark, is, of course, special, as it currently ranks as the top contract ever handed out in baseball, last winter to Shohei Ohtani. But as noted recently by insider Steve Phillips, there's a good reason why Soto wants to top that $700M plateau.
