Willy Adames's Free Agent Price Tag Projected by Executives

The annual free agent frenzy over big-time shortstops won't be quite the same this coming offseason, but that's not to say that the biggest name at short won't be getting a sweet contract.

According to baseball insider Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Willy Adames will likely take home the second-largest deal amongst infielders this coming winter.

Executives believe (Adames) will earn close to Matt Chapman’s recent six-year, $151 million deal with the Giants.

The Milwaukee Brewers' shortstop is having another power-packed season and putting up some career-best numbers in 2024. Adames has launched 32 home runs, to go with 109 RBIs (which currently leads the National League) and has scored 87 runs, all of those personal bests. He also has an OPS of .807 and an OPS+ of 122.

He's drilled 107 homers in his 3½ seasons in Milwaukee, with 345 RBIs and a 114 OPS+.

Unlike recent seasons when shortstops have dominated the free agent cycle, with names like Trea Turner, Corey Seager, Francisco Lindor, Xander Bogaerts, Dansby Swanson and Carlos Correa commanding huge nine-figure deals, Adames will have the SS market all to himself. His competition? Tim Anderson, Miguel Rojas (club option), Amed Rosario, and Paul DeJong. Exactly... None of them are going to cut into the large demand that there'll be for Adames's services.

According to Joel Rueter of Bleacher Report, the Brew Crew likely have no intention of getting into that bidding.

"Ever since Joey Ortiz was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles in the Corbin Burnes trade, he has quietly been viewed as the shortstop of the future while he settles into life in the big leagues this season as a third baseman.

"Do I think they will (re-sign Adames): No".
