Veteran Pitcher Re-Signs With Red Sox For 3rd Time This Season

He spent the first six years of his major league career with one team. But this 7th season has been a rollercoaster ride of DFAs, trips into free agency, and minor league contracts. Now Brad Keller has re-signed a deal with the Boston Red Sox for the third time this season.

After beginning his 2024 with the Chicago White Sox, the team DFA'd him back in April, and he elected free agency. He soon signed a minor league contract with Sox of a different color, in Boston. He was on their 40-man roster, with time in both the majors and minors, until mid-August, when the BoSox tried to send him again to the minors, but he declined and become a free agent once again, only to quickly re-sign with Boston.

It was only four days ago that the Sox outrighted Keller off the major league roster—again—and he elected to become a free agent—again. And now, for the third time, he has re-signed with the Red Sox on a minor league deal.

Through all that, he's compiled an 0-4 record with a 5.44 ERA and 1.52 WHIP at the big league level this season, while posting a 4.06 ERA in 51 innings at Triple-A.

The first six years of Keller's career were a tale of two pitchers. Up until 2020, he was a fine part of the Royals rotation, with a 3.50 ERA in 57 starts. But in his next 57 starts with KC, Keller, now 29, garnered a 5.18 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP.
