Update On Alex Bregman Contract Talks With Astros

Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown recently provided an update on the team's contract talks with star third baseman Alex Bregman, who is set to become a free agent after the 2024 season.

Brown confirmed that he had a brief conversation with Bregman’s agent, Scott Boras, during a series in Anaheim, but both parties agreed to hold off on formal discussions until after the season.

The Astros are focused on their playoff push, but Brown emphasized that retaining Bregman will be a priority once the season concludes.

Bregman, 30, continues to be a key contributor for Houston, hitting .256 with 23 home runs, 67 RBIs, and a .754 OPS in 136 games this season.

While his production is slightly down compared to previous years, Bregman remains one of the premier third basemen in the league, with a strong postseason track record that adds to his appeal.

Boras has hinted that Bregman’s versatility, including the possibility of playing second base, could make him even more attractive to potential suitors, expanding the range of teams interested in his services.

The Boston Red Sox, who need a second baseman and have Rafael Devers at third, have been rumored as a potential landing spot.

The Astros, however, face financial challenges as they look to retain Bregman, with their payroll for 2025 already projected at $146.6 million.

Bregman’s free agency is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing storylines of the upcoming offseason, as teams around the league prepare to make offers for the elite third baseman.
