Toronto Blue Jays Claim Pitcher Off Waivers From Cardinals

The Toronto Blue Jays have added right-handed pitcher Nick Robertson to their roster after claiming him off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels, marking the 26-year-old’s fifth team in just over a year.

Originally drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2019, Robertson has since bounced between the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals, and Los Angeles Angels, but has struggled to find consistency in the majors.

In 34.2 innings over the past two seasons, he posted a 5.45 ERA, though his underlying metrics, including a 25.3% strikeout rate and 7% walk rate, suggest more potential than his results show.

Robertson’s minor league numbers tell a similar story, with a 4.39 ERA over 203 innings since 2021.

Despite solid strikeout-to-walk ratios, he has struggled with control and consistency, which has led to multiple trades and waiver claims in the past year.

Known for his mid-90s fastball, changeup with heavy fade, and developing slider, Robertson still has two option years remaining, allowing the Blue Jays to work on refining his mechanics in Triple-A Buffalo while keeping him under team control for future seasons.

To accommodate Robertson’s addition, the Blue Jays made a series of roster moves, including placing outfielder Daulton Varsho on the 10-day injured list and reinstating shortstop Bo Bichette from the IL.

The team has been active throughout the season in acquiring bullpen depth, and Robertson represents another low-risk, high-upside gamble as they aim to solidify their pitching staff heading into the final stretch of the season.
