NY Mets Shut Down Kodai Senga for Rest of the Season

This is not the kind of news the New York Mets needed to hear as they head into the final week of the campaign hanging on to the third and final Wild Card spot in the National League. Kodai Senga is being shut down once again and is out for the remainder of the regular schedule at least.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that Senga felt triceps tightness after Saturday's rehab outing. The triceps was part of the shoulder injury troubles that knocked him out for the first four months of the season.

The sophomore jinx has hit Senga hard, as he has only been able to make one start for the Mets, back on July 26th. He was finally returning from the shoulder issue, when he suffered a high-grade left calf strain in that start, which seemed to knock him out for the year.

But on Friday, it was thought that he might be able to return to the team for the final weekend of the regular season if his abbreviated Triple-A start on Saturday went smoothly. As we now know, it did not.

Senga was the Mets' No. 1 starter in 2023, recording a 2.98 ERA in 29 starts, and finishing runner-up in Rookie of the Year voting and 7th in Cy Young balloting.

It's unknown if he'll be available for any playoff action, as it will depend on his recovery from the triceps tightness over the next week.

Without his availability, the Mets have moved up Luis Severino to make his next start on Tuesday, thereby being available to start Game 162 on Sunday if the Mets have a make-or-break game to get into the playoffs.
