New York Yankees Release Pitcher Acquired In Trade With Dodgers

The New York Yankees have officially released left-handed reliever Victor González, as first reported by MLB.com's Bryan Hoch.

Acquired in a December 2023 trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, González was brought in alongside infield prospect Jorbit Vivas in exchange for shortstop Trey Sweeney, the Yankees' 2021 first-round pick.

At the time, the Yankees viewed González as a potential key bullpen piece, especially following the departure of Wandy Peralta in free agency.

González had previously shown promise with the Dodgers, posting a 3.22 ERA over 89.1 innings from 2020 to 2023, but his performance in New York did not live up to expectations.

Despite making the Yankees’ Opening Day roster and putting up a 3.86 ERA across 27 appearances, González’s underlying numbers were concerning.

His strikeout rate plummeted, and he walked more batters than he struck out, resulting in a troubling, which suggested his success was not sustainable.

After being designated for assignment in June and clearing waivers, González continued to struggle at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he posted a 4.50 ERA over 22 innings.

These persistent issues led the Yankees to release him, leaving the bullpen with only two left-handed options in Tim Hill and Tim Mayza as they prepare for the postseason.

While the Yankees moved on from González, the Dodgers have made the most of the original trade.

They flipped Trey Sweeney to the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline for starting pitcher Jack Flaherty, who has since become one of the top pitchers of the 2024 season.

Meanwhile, Sweeney has earned a promotion to the majors and established himself as the Tigers’ everyday shortstop, leaving the Yankees with bullpen uncertainties as they look to solidify their roster for the final stretch of the season.
