New York Yankees DFA Promising Reliever

The New York Yankees have made the surprising decision to designate right-handed reliever Ron Marinaccio for assignment as they reshuffle their bullpen heading into the final stretch of the season.

Marinaccio, 29, showed immense promise during his 2022 debut when he posted a 2.05 ERA over 44 innings with a 30.9% strikeout rate, quickly becoming a reliable arm in the Yankees' bullpen.

However, despite his early dominance, control issues, reflected in a high 13.3% walk rate, began to surface, and his performance has gradually declined since then.

Marinaccio’s ERA rose to 3.99 in 2023, and this season, he pitched to a 3.86 ERA across 23.1 innings while his strikeout rate dropped to 25.3%.

Throughout the 2024 season, Marinaccio was frequently shuttled between the majors and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he found more success with a 2.04 ERA and a 25.8% strikeout rate over 39.2 innings.

However, his inconsistency at the big-league level, combined with his persistent control issues, led the Yankees to make the decision to DFA him.

With Marinaccio in his final option year and no longer able to be freely sent down after this season, the Yankees opted to clear space on the 40-man roster for right-hander Cody Poteet, who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list after posting a solid 2.14 ERA in four starts earlier in the year.

Despite his recent struggles, Marinaccio’s track record and four years of team control beyond this season make him an appealing long-term option for teams looking to add to their bullpen depth.

If he clears waivers, the Yankees could outright him to Triple-A, though he would be eligible for minor-league free agency at the end of the season.
