New York Mets DFA Extremely Versatile Infielder

The New York Mets have designated infielder Pablo Reyes for assignment, clearing space on the roster for newly acquired utility player Eddy Alvarez.

Reyes, 31, was initially acquired from the Boston Red Sox in May for cash considerations and made just one appearance for the Mets, entering as a pinch runner on September 1.

Before joining the Mets, Reyes struggled at the plate with Boston, hitting .183/.234/.217 in 64 plate appearances.

Known for his defensive versatility, having played nearly every position except catcher, Reyes has primarily been utilized as a middle infielder throughout his six-season MLB career, which has included stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, Red Sox, and Mets.

Despite his ability to play multiple positions, Reyes has struggled to maintain consistent offensive production at the major league level, posting a career slash line of .248/.309/.349 across 572 plate appearances.

His minor league track record is more promising, with a .277/.347/.450 line over six Triple-A seasons, but his performance has not translated to sustained success in the majors.

With no minor league options remaining, Reyes will now head to waivers, where he is expected to clear as he did earlier in the season after being designated for assignment by Boston.

If he clears waivers, Reyes can opt for free agency rather than accept an outright assignment.

In contrast, the Mets are turning to Eddy Alvarez to fill the roster spot.

Alvarez, a 34-year-old utility player, was also acquired from the Red Sox for cash considerations and brings defensive flexibility as a left-handed hitter.

Alvarez had a productive season in Triple-A Worcester, hitting 18 home runs and stealing 18 bases with an .811 OPS.

Alvarez has also won a Olympic silver medal in both men's speed skating and baseball with Team USA.
