MLB Rumors: Reds Already Have Eyes On Name To Be Next Manager

The Cincinnati Reds wasted no time in targeting a new manager after firing David Bell just days before the end of the 2024 season, and one name has quickly emerged as their top candidate—Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker.

According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Schumaker is already "on the Reds' radar" after leading the Marlins to an unexpected playoff berth in 2023 and earning NL Manager of the Year honors.

Schumaker's decision to remove the 2025 option from his contract with the Marlins has made him a free agent at the end of this season, sparking interest from multiple teams, including the Reds, who are looking for a fresh start following another season of unmet expectations.

Bell's dismissal came after six seasons in which he compiled a 409-456 record with only one playoff appearance, as the Reds once again struggled to reach .500 despite a promising young core.

Schumaker's success in Miami, where he guided an underdog team to the postseason, makes him an intriguing fit for Cincinnati, which boasts young talent like Elly De La Cruz and Hunter Greene.

Even with injuries to key players such as Matt McLain and Jeimer Candelario, the Reds finished just five games under .500 and showed flashes of potential, making Schumaker a natural target for the role.

However, the Reds face competition for Schumaker’s services, as the Chicago White Sox and Seattle Mariners are also reportedly interested, and there is speculation that his former team, the St. Louis Cardinals, could enter the mix.

Still, the connection between Schumaker and the Reds—he played for Cincinnati in 2014 and is familiar with the NL Central—could give them an edge.
