MLB Rumors: 2 Teams Linked To Pete Alonso In Free Agency

Pete Alonso is expected to be one of the most sought-after sluggers in this offseason's free agency, and according to MLB insider Jon Heyman of The New York Post, both the San Diego Padres and Baltimore Orioles have emerged as prominent contenders to land the New York Mets' star first baseman.

Despite a slightly down year by his standards, Alonso is still on pace for over 35 home runs, marking the fifth time in six seasons he's reached that benchmark.

Alonso reportedly turned down a seven-year, $158 million extension from the Mets, with Heyman noting that his market value could exceed $185 million in free agency.

“If not the Mets, the Astros, Rangers, Mariners, Orioles, Padres, and Cubs all work,” Heyman wrote, showing Alonso’s widespread appeal.

For the Padres, who have a history of making bold moves in free agency, adding Alonso to their already star-studded lineup could reignite their offense after a disappointing season.

Meanwhile, the Orioles, with a young, cost-controlled core, have the financial room to make a major splash and elevate themselves further in a competitive AL East.

Both teams are seen as ideal fits for Alonso, whose power would provide a key boost to their respective lineups.

Heyman pointed out that Alonso’s 127 OPS+ suggests his recent mechanical adjustments have him playing at an elite level, despite some perceptions of decline.
