Minnesota Twins DFA Recent Waiver Wire Acquistion

The Minnesota Twins have designated left-hander Cole Irvin for assignment, just days after acquiring him off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

Irvin, 30, struggled in his brief stint with the Twins, allowing five earned runs over 3.2 innings across four appearances.

Despite a scoreless inning in his final outing against the Miami Marlins, his overall performance was marred by four walks and only two strikeouts.

This marks the second time in less than two weeks that Irvin has been DFA’d, as the Orioles had also cut ties with him earlier this month.

Irvin's 2024 season has been rough, bouncing between Baltimore’s rotation and bullpen before joining Minnesota.

He posted a 4.86 ERA across 107.1 innings with the Orioles, but his struggles continued with the Twins as they looked to him for bullpen depth amid their playoff push.

“Irvin might not save the day for the Twins,” a source had noted after his acquisition, and that proved accurate as his performance fell short of expectations.

With only five games left in the season and the team two games back in the wild card race, Minnesota needed more stability from its bullpen and ultimately decided to move on from the veteran lefty.

In addition to DFA’ing Irvin, the Twins made several other roster moves, including recalling reliever Jorge Alcala and utility player Austin Martin from Triple-A St. Paul, while activating right-hander Justin Topa from the 60-day injured list.

The team also placed outfielder Matt Wallner on the 10-day injured list with an oblique strain, effectively ending his season.
