Minnesota Twins Cut Catcher After Purposely Aiding Opposing Teams

The Minnesota Twins have released catcher Derek Bender, a 2024 sixth-round draft pick, after allegations emerged that he intentionally tipped pitches to an opposing team during a crucial game.

Bender, who was playing for the Twins' Single-A affiliate, the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels, reportedly informed hitters from the Lakeland Flying Tigers about the specific pitches being thrown by his teammate, Ross Dunn, during the second game of a doubleheader on September 6.

Lakeland capitalized on the information, scoring four runs in a single inning and ultimately winning the game 6-0, which knocked Fort Myers out of playoff contention.

The incident came to light when Lakeland’s coaching staff informed Fort Myers’ coaches after the game, reportedly shocked by the blatant nature of Bender’s actions.

According to sources, Bender had expressed to his teammates that he wanted the season to end, raising further questions about his commitment to the team.

As a result, he did not participate in the final two games of the season and was confined to the bullpen before the Twins decided to release him. Despite his abrupt dismissal, Bender will retain his $297,500 signing bonus from the draft.

Bender’s short professional career followed a standout college tenure at Coastal Carolina, but he struggled in his 19 games with Fort Myers, hitting just .200 with two home runs and eight RBIs.

His release not only ends his time with the Twins but also casts a shadow over his potential future in professional baseball, as the incident raises serious concerns about his conduct and sportsmanship.

The Twins have not publicly commented on the situation.
