Mets Claim Speedy Outfielder Off Waivers From Padres

The New York Mets have bolstered their outfield depth by claiming speedy outfielder José Azocar off waivers from the San Diego Padres.

Azocar, 28, has spent parts of the last three seasons with the Padres, appearing in 214 games and showcasing solid defensive versatility across all three outfield positions.

While his offensive production has been modest, with a .243/.287/.322 slash line over 397 plate appearances, his speed and defense make him a valuable depth option for the Mets.

The Mets have optioned Azocar to Triple-A Syracuse, where he will provide additional depth as the team gears up for a potential playoff run.

Despite his offensive limitations, his speed addresses an area of need for the Mets, who rank 17th in MLB in stolen bases this season with 91.

Azocar’s base-stealing ability, combined with his defensive versatility, could make him a valuable late-game substitute, either as a pinch runner or defensive replacement, should the Mets call him up later in the season.

His control through the 2026 season also adds flexibility for the team’s long-term plans.

To make room for Azocar on the 40-man roster, the Mets moved right-hander Sean Reid-Foley to the 60-day injured list due to a shoulder impingement, likely sidelining him for the remainder of the season.
