Matt Chapman Signs Huge Extension

In the rarest of baseball feats, Scott Boras has allowed a client to sign a contract in- season, just three weeks before hitting free agency. Matt Chapman has agreed to a 6-year, $151 million extension with the San Francisco Giants.

As noted by Jeff Passan, the new deal usurps the original final two option years of the deal he signed with the Giants last spring, and he will now not be opting out to join the ranks of free agents.

Chapman gets a no-trade clause with this deal. He will be 32 to start the contract next season, and it will run through the rest of the decade, and the 2030 season. There is no deferred money.

It's the largest contract for the Giants since Farhan Zaidi took over as president of baseball operations in November 2018.

In the difficult hitting environment of Oracle Park, Chapman has had a very good season, blasting 22 homers with 69 RBIs thus far, with a .778 OPS and a 121 OPS+, his highest such number in five years.

And as usual, he's playing his stellar Gold Glove caliber defense at third base.

Chapman is a two-time Platinum Glove winner in addition to his four Gold Gloves, and leads all major league third basemen this season with 13 Defensive Runs Saved
