Marlins Claim 6-Foot-7 Flamethrower Off Waivers From Dodgers

The Miami Marlins have bolstered their bullpen by claiming right-hander Michael Petersen off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers, designating Brett de Geus for assignment to make room on the roster.

Petersen, 30, made his MLB debut earlier this season, appearing in 11 games for the Dodgers and posting a 6.43 ERA over 14 innings.

While his major league numbers were underwhelming, including a 17.2% strikeout rate and a 12.5% walk rate, his performance in Triple-A was much more promising.

With Oklahoma City, Petersen recorded a stellar 1.64 ERA, striking out 44 batters in 33 innings with a strong 35.2% strikeout rate and a significantly reduced 6.4% walk rate.

Standing at 6'7" and armed with a 97 mph fastball and an upper-80s cutter, Petersen’s raw potential has caught the Marlins' attention as they seek to deepen their bullpen.

His nickname, "British Gas," reflects his power-pitching style, which he showcased during the 2023 World Baseball Classic for Great Britain.

Despite his struggles in the majors, Petersen's ability to limit walks and generate strikeouts in Triple-A gives Miami hope that he can turn into a reliable option at the big-league level.

In a corresponding move, the Marlins designated 26-year-old Brett de Geus for assignment.

De Geus, a former Rule 5 pick, has struggled to find consistency in his major league career, posting a 7.17 ERA over 59 innings with multiple teams, including the Rangers, Diamondbacks, Mariners, and now the Marlins.

His limited action in 2024 for Miami saw him post a 6.35 ERA in just 5.2 innings.
